Paracetamol
Indications/Uses
Mild to moderate pain following surgery; fever when IV route is clinically justified by an urgent need to treat pain or hyperthermia &/or when other routes are not possible or ineffective.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & adolescent weighing >50 kg 1 g IV infusion for 15 min up to 4 times daily. Max dose: 4 g. Adult & adolescent weighing <50 kg, childn >33 kg 15 mg/kg IV infusion for 15 min up to 4 times daily. Max dose: 60 mg/kg. Min interval between dose: 4 hr.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Severe liver insufficiency, hepatic failure or active liver disease.
Special Precautions
Hepatocellular insufficiency, severe renal insufficiency (CrCl <30 mL/min); chronic alcoholism, malnutrition (low reserves of hepatic glutathione), dehydration. Concomitant use w/ other drugs containing paracetamol. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, hypersensitivity reactions, skin rashes or urticaria, malaise, hypotension, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, neutropenia, increased hepatic transaminase level.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid, salicylamide, enzyme-inducing prep, oral anticoagulants.
