Cefoperazone
Indications/Uses
Resp tract infections, peritonitis & intra-abdominal infections, bacterial septicemia, skin & soft tissue infections, UTI, endometritis, pelvic inflammatory disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 2-4 g in divided doses 12 hrly. Severe cases: Dose may be increased to 6-12 g/day in 2-4 divided doses. Patient w/ biliary obstruction, liver disease, kidney failure or on hemodialysis Max: 1-2 g/day.
Contraindications
History of allergy to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins or other antibiotics. Liver disease, biliary obstruction. May cause false +ve result for urine glucose test w/ Benedict's or Fehling's soln. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Skin reactions, Coombs' test changes, reversible neutropenia, decrease in Hb & hematocrit, liver failure, diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea & vomiting, inj site pain (IM), phlebitis (IV), anaphylactic shock, pseudomembranous colitis, hemorrhage, pruritus, SJS.
Drug Interactions
Aminoglycosides, other antibiotics; alcohol.
