Chlorpromazine HCl
Indications/Uses
Schizophrenia & related psychoses, tranquillisation & emergency control in behavioural disturbances; adjunctive therapy in behavioural disorders due to mental retardation.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 10-25 mg every 4-6 hr. Psychosis 200-800 mg daily. Childn 0.5 mg/kg every 4-6 hr.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Bone marrow depression, Reye's syndrome; coma caused by barbiturates or alcohol. Severe hepatic or renal impairment. Childn <6 mth.
Special Precautions
CV disease, phaeochromocytoma & other conditions where a sudden drop in BP is undesirable, tachycardia or cardiac insufficiency, history of jaundice or parkinsonism, epilepsy, hypothyroidism, myasthenia gravis, prostatic hypertrophy & glaucoma. Hepatic dysfunction. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Jaundice, postural hypotension & resp depression, blood dyscrasias, acute dystonia, tardive dyskinesia, visual disturbances, extrapyramidal reactions (high doses).
Drug Interactions
Alcohol, CNS depressants, guanethidine, anticholinergics, propranolol.
