Ceftriaxone
Indications/Uses
Resp tract, ENT, bone, joint & soft tissue, intra-abdominal & genital (including gonorrhea) infections, UTI, sepsis, meningitis & infections in immunocompromized patients. Peri-op prophylaxis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr 1-2 g once daily. Severe infections due to sensitive organisms May be increased to 4 g once daily. Childn ≥50 kg Adult dose. Infant 15 days to childn 12 yr 20-80 mg/kg once daily. Infant ≤14 days 20-50 mg/kg once daily. Max: 50 mg/kg. IV dose ≥50 mg/kg should be given via infusion for at least 30 min.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Check blood profile regularly in long-term use. Patients w/ a history of anaphylactic shock. May cause pseudomembranous colitis in patients w/ diarrhea after receiving antibiotic therapy. Severe liver & kidney dysfunction. Pregnancy & lactation. Neonates especially premature babies. Neonates w/ hyperbilirubinemia.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomatitis, glossitis, rash, pruritus, urticaria, allergic dermatitis, edema, exanthema, erythematous multiforme, eosinophilia, bleeding, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, granulocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, headache, dizziness, anaphylaxis reactions, pain (IM) or phlebitis (IV) at inj site; increased SGOT/SGPT, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin; increased BUN; moniliasis, vaginitis; diaphoresis & sweating; leucocytosis, lymphocytosis, monocytosis, basophilia, reduced prothrombin time, jaundice, gallbladder sludge, glycosuria, hematuria, anaphylaxis, bronchospasm, serum sickness, abdominal pain, colitis, bloating, dyspepsia, palpitation, epistaxis, biliary lithiasis, agranulocytosis, renal precipitation, nephrolithiasis.
