Cefixime
Indications/Uses
Uncomplicated gonorrhea (cervical/urethral), UTI, otitis media, pharyngitis & tonsillitis, chronic bronchitis, typhoid fever in childn.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Cap Adult & childn ≥30 kg 50-100 mg 2 times daily. More severe or intractable infections May be increased up to 200 mg 2 times daily. Susp Childn 1.5-3 mg/kg 2 times daily. More severe or refractory infections may be increased up to 6 mg/kg. Typhoid fever Childn 10-15 mg/kg/day for 2 wk.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins. Personal or familial history of some form of allergy. Poor oral nutrition, patients receiving parenteral nutrition. Serious renal dysfunction. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <6 mth. Elderly, debilitated patients.
Adverse Reactions
Shock; hypersensitivity; haematologic disorders; increase in SGOT, SGPT, alkaline phosphatase; renal impairment; GI disorders; Pulmonary Infiltrates w/ Eosinophilia Syndromes (PIE); stomatitis or candidiasis; vit K deficiency; headache; false +ve on Benedict, Fehling, clinitest, testape, Coombs test.
