Indications/Uses
Septicemia, subacute bacterial endocarditis, peritonitis, lower resp tract infections; bone, skin & soft tissue infections; gynecological infections; UTI; biliary tract infections; otorhinological infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1 g in 2 equally divided doses, may be increased to 1.5-3 g in 3 divided doses. Max: 5 g daily. Childn 20-40 mg/kg in 2 equally divided doses, may be increased to 100 mg/kg in ≥3 equally divided doses.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. History of shock caused by cefazolin.
Special Precautions
History of hypersensitivity to penicillins or cephalosporins, personal or familial history of some form of allergy. Seriously impaired renal function. Poor oral nutrition, parenteral nutrition, the elderly or debilitated state. Patients receiving potent diuretics & nephrotoxic antibiotics.
Adverse Reactions
Shock; hypersensitivity reactions; granulocytopenia, eosinophilia, hemolytic anemia or thrombocytopenia; increase in SGOT, SGPT or alkaline phosphatase; renal impairment; pseudomembranous colitis; convulsions; stomatitis or candidiasis; vit deficiencies; headache, dizziness or malaise.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid may increase & prolong cephalosporin plasma levels & toxicity.
