Amoxicillin
Indications/Uses
Resp tract, GUT, skin & soft tissue infections. Gonorrhea. Infections of amoxicillin-sensitive bacterial strains, soft tissue & skin infections (non-penicilinase producing Staph, Strep, E. coli). Resp tract infections (H. influenzae, Strep, S. pneumoniae, non-penicilinase producing Staph, E. coli), GUT infections (E. coli, P. mirabilis & Strep faecalis), gonorrhea (non-penicilinase producing N. gonorrhea).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn ≥20 kg 250-500 mg 8 hrly. Childn <20 kg 20-40 mg/kg in divided doses 8 hrly. Patients receiving peritoneal dialysis Max: 500 mg daily. Gonococcal urethral infection 3 g as a single dose.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to β-lactam antibiotics (penicillin, cephalosporin).
Special Precautions
May cause severe colitis & super infections. Lymphatic leukemia. Perform sensitivity test before administration. Do not use for meningitis or bone-joint infections. Monitor renal, liver & blood functions in long term usage. Monitor urine & plasma level on patients w/ renal impairment. Use w/ caution in pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Sensitivity reactions (erythematous maculopapular rashes, urticaria, serum sickness), serious & fatal anaphylaxis, GI disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), reversible haematological reactions.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid elevates & prolongs blood level of amoxicillin. Allopurinol intensifies the skin reactions.
