Amoxicillin
Indications/Uses
Skin & soft tissue, resp, GUT infections. Gonorrhea.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >20 kg 250-500 mg every 8 hr. Childn <20 kg 20-40 mg/kg daily in divided dose every 8 hr. Patient receiving peritoneal dialysis Max dose: 500 mg daily. Gonococcal urethritis 3 g as a single dose.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals for better absorption & to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to β-lactam antibiotics.
Special Precautions
Do not use as treatment for meningitis or infection of the joints. Monitor blood, kidney & liver function in long-term use. Monitor plasma & urine levels in patients w/ renal failure.
Adverse Reactions
Anaphylaxis. Allergic reactions eg, erythematous maculopapular rash, urticaria, serum sickness; GI tract disorders eg, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; hematological reactions.
Drug Interactions
Increased plasma conc w/ probenecid. Increased risk of skin reactions w/ allopurinol.
