Alprazolam
Indications/Uses
Short-term therapy of moderate or severe anxiety & anxiety associated w/ depression.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 0.25-0.5 mg 3 times daily, may be increased at 3-4 days interval to a max of 4 mg daily in divided doses. Elderly, debilitated patient & w/ severe hepatic impairment 0.25 mg 2-3 times daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Side effects eg sleepiness/drowsiness may be reduced if taken immediately after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines. Acute narrow-angle glaucoma. Myasthenia gravis, acute pulmonary insufficiency, phobia, chronic psychotic obsession.
Special Precautions
Avoid single-dose treatment in depression or anxiety-related depression; long-term treatment. Resp disease, muscle weakness, real personality disorder. History of drug or alcohol abuse. Closely monitor in patients w/ chronic pulmonary insufficiency. May cause addiction. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Chronic renal & hepatic disorders. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <10 yr. Elderly & debilitated patients.
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness, ataxia/muscle weakness, amnesia, depression, light-headedness, confusion, hallucinations, blurred vision.
Drug Interactions
Increased effects w/ CNS depressants, alcohol & barbiturates. Inhibited excretion w/ cimetidine.
