Indications/Uses
DM in adults, adolescents & childn ≥8 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
Should be taken with food: Administer w/in 15 min before a meal or immediately after a meal.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Switching to another type or brand of insulin should be done under strict medical supervision & may require change in dose. Perform continuous rotation of the inj site to reduce risk of developing lipodystrophy & cutaneous amyloidosis. Monitor blood glucose after change in inj site & consider dose adjustment of antidiabetics. Inadequate dosing or discontinuation of treatment. Adjust dose if to undertake increased physical activity or change in usual meal plan. Uncorrected hypo- or hyperglycaemia. Insulin requirements may be altered during illness or emotional disturbances. May impair ability to concentrate or react when driving or using machines. Renal & hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <6 yr. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Hypoglycaemia. Inj site & local hypersensitivity reactions eg, redness, swelling & itching at the inj site.
Drug Interactions
May enhance blood-glucose lowering effect & increase susceptibility to hypoglycemia by oral antidiabetics, ACE inhibitors, disopyramide, fibrates, fluoxetine, MAOIs, pentoxifylline, propoxyphene, salicylates, sulfonamides. May reduce blood-glucose lowering effect by corticosteroids, danazol, diazoxide, diuretics, glucagon, INH, phenothiazine derivatives, somatropin, sympathomimetics (eg, epinephrine, salbutamol, terbutaline), thyroid hormones, estrogens, progestins, PIs, atypical antipsychotics (eg, olanzapine & clozapine). Blood glucose-lowering activity may either be potentiated or weakened by β-blockers, clonidine, lithium salts or alcohol. Hypoglycemia may sometimes followed by hyperglycemia w/ pentamidine. Reduced or absent signs of adrenergic counter-regulation w/ sympatholytics eg, β-blockers, clonidine, guanethidine, reserpine.
