Indications/Uses
Chronic HBV infection in adults w/ compensated liver disease & active viral replication evidence, persistently elevated serum ALT & histological evidence of active inflammation &/or fibrosis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Nucleoside naïve patients Recommended dose: 0.5 mg once daily. Lamivudine-refractory patients (ie, w/ evidence of viraemia while on lamivudine or the presence of lamivudine resistance [LVDr] mutations) Recommended dose: 1 mg once daily.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take at least 2 hr before & after a meal.
Special Precautions
Hepatitis exacerbation. Lactic acidosis & severe hepatomegaly w/ steatosis. Frequently monitor virological response in lamivudine-refractory patients & perform appropriate resistance testing. Evaluate renal function before & during treatment in liver transplant recipients receiving cyclosporine or tacrolimus. Not to be used for HIV/HBV co-infected patients who are not receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Patients w/ rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Patients w/ renal impairment.
