Contents
Brompheniramine maleate, Phenylephrine hydrochloride.
Description
Each 5 mL contains: Brompheniramine maleate 4 mg, Phenylephrine HCl 10 mg.
Action
Antihistamines used in the treatment of allergy act by competing with histamine for H1-receptor sites in effector cells. They thereby prevent, but do not reverse, responses mediated by histamine alone. Antihistamines antagonize, in varying degrees, most of the pharmacological effect of histamine, including urticaria and pruritus. Also, the anticholinergic actions of most antihistamines provide a drying effect on the nasal mucosa. Antihistamines prevent responses to acetylcholine that are mediated via muscarinic receptors.
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic treatment for the temporary relief of nasal and sinus congestion, sneezing and rhinorrhea associated with the common cold and allergic rhinitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
The amount as follows to be taken 3 to 4 times daily: Adults: 5 mL (1 teaspoonful).
Children (6-12 years): 2.5 mL (1/2 teaspoonful).
Contraindications
Contraindicated to any of the antihistamines or sympathomimetic amines.
Other medical problems, especially cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hepatic function impairment, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, prostatic hypertrophy, or renal function impairment.
Special Precautions
May cause drowsiness or dizziness.
Avoid alcoholic beverages or other CNS depressants. Not taking more medication than the amount recommended.
Use in children: increased susceptibility to anticholinergic effects of antihistamines and to vasopressor effect of sympathomimetic amines; psychiatric disorders more likely with the use of phenylpropanolamine in children under 6 years of age; hyperexcitability (paradoxical reaction) may occur.
Use in the elderly: Anticholinergic and CNS stimulant effects more likely to occur.
Use In Pregnancy & Lactation
Breast-feeding: antihistamines may cause excitement or irritability in nursing infants; high risk for infants from sympathomimetic amines.
Adverse Reactions
Signs of potential side effects, especially blood dyscrasias, cardiac arrhythmias, psychotic episodes, and tightness in chest.
Drug Interactions
To date, there are no known interactions with other drugs. Nevertheless, caution is recommended if sedative are also being taken.
