Tranexamic acid
Indications/Uses
Treatment of haemorrhage, or threatened haemorrhage associated w/ excessive fibrinolysis. Management of haemophiliacs undergoing dental extractions. Prophylaxis of hereditary angioedema.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Patients w/ history or risk of thrombosis, unless concurrently given w/ anticoagulants. Patients w/ acquired color vision disturbances.
Special Precautions
Not indicated in hematuria caused by diseases of the renal parenchyma. Increased risk of clotting in patients w/ underlying thrombotic states. Give in reduced doses to patient w/ renal impairment. Lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Anorexia, hypnosia, pruritus, erythema, skin rash, heartburn; GI disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea).
Drug Interactions
Increased potential for thrombus formation w/ OCs or estrogen-containing medication. Concurrent use w/ Factor IX complex may increase risk of thrombotic complication in perisurgical management of hemophilic patients.
