Timolol maleate
Indications/Uses
Reduction of elevated IOP in patients w/ glaucoma.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Instill 1 drop bd in the affected eye(s) (1 in the morning, 1 in the evening).
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to timolol or β-blockers. Current or history of resp problems eg, asthma, severe chronic obstructive bronchitis. Heart problems; bradycardia; arrhythmia; heart failure (cardiogenic shock).
Special Precautions
Current or history of CHD, heart failure; low BP; cardiac rhythm disturbances; breathing problems, asthma or COPD; poor blood circulation disease (eg, Raynaud's disease or Raynaud's syndrome); diabetes; hyperthyroidism. Patients wearing soft contact lenses. May affect some medicines used during anaesth. Inform physician in case of eye irritation or any new eye problems; eye infection; eye injury or operation; worsening eye problems. Discontinue treatment in case of allergic reaction or hypersensitivity. Contains benzalkonium Cl. Remove contact lenses prior to instillation & reinsert after 15 min. Contains disodium phosphate dodecahydrate & Na dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate. May affect ability to drive &/or operate machinery. Do not use if pregnant unless considered necessary. Do not use if breast-feeding. Newborns, infants & younger childn.
Adverse Reactions
Allergic reactions; hypoglycemia; insomnia, depression, nightmares, memory loss, hallucination; fainting, stroke, reduced blood supply to the brain, increases in signs & symptoms of myasthenia gravis, dizziness, unusual sensations (eg, tingling or pins & needles), headache; eye irritation, visual disturbances & other eye problems; tinnitus; bradycardia, chest pain, palpitations, oedema, arrhythmia, CHF, heart attack, heart failure; low BP, Raynaud's phenomenon, cold hands & feet, limping; airway constriction, difficulty breathing, dyspnea, wheezing, cough; taste disturbances, nausea, indigestion, diarrhoea, dry mouth, abdominal pain, vomiting; sexual dysfunction, decreased libido, Peyronie's disease; alopecia, psoriasiform rash, worsening psoriasis, skin rash, itching; muscle weakness/tiredness, muscle pain not caused by exercise; SLE.
Drug Interactions
Potential interaction w/ Ca antagonist eg, nifedipine, verapamil, diltiazem; digoxin; catecholamine-depleting agents eg, rauwolfia alkaloids, reserpine; pressor amines eg, adrenaline; quinidine; fluoxetine, paroxetine; clonidine; other BP-lowering medicines, heart medicines or antidiabetics. Additive effect w/ oral or ophth β-blockers.
