Indications/Uses
Advanced or spreading ovarian & breast cancer. Advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in patient who cannot be treated w/ surgery &/or radiotherapy. Kaposi's sarcoma which may be associated w/ AIDS caused by HIV disease where treatments ie, liposomal anthracyclines have not worked.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Individualized dosage based on physician's advice.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Low neutrophil count. Serious uncontrolled infection in patient w/ Kaposi's sarcoma. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Patient w/ heart disease; diarrhoea during or shortly after treatment w/ paclitaxel; peripheral neuropathy; blood problems eg, changes in cell count. Severe inflammation of the mucous membrane in patient w/ Kaposi's sarcoma. Combination w/ radiotherapy of the lung. Hepatic impairment. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery due to alcohol content. Contains macrogolglycerol ricinoleate which can cause severe allergic reactions.
Adverse Reactions
Alopecia, decreased blood cell count; anemia, UTI & upper resp tract infection; decreased number of blood platelets & bleeding; hypersensitivity reactions eg, flushing & rash; peripheral neuropathy; low BP, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; muscle or joint pain; inflammation of areas eg, lining of the mouth. Bradycardia; transient & mild nail & skin changes; painful swelling & inflammation at inj site; changes in liver function tests.
Drug Interactions
Paclitaxel should be given before cisplatin. Paclitaxel should be given 24 hr after doxorubicin. Use w/ caution when concomitantly taking medicines which influence the metabolism of paclitaxel eg, erythromycin, fluoxetine, gemfibrozil, rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarb, efavirenz, & nevirapine; & for HIV patients receiving PIs (ritonavir, nelfinavir) as concomitant therapy.
