Treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections caused by ampicillin-sensitive organisms eg, ear, nose & throat infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, UTI, gonorrhoea, gynaecological infections, septicaemia, peritonitis, endocarditis, meningitis, enteric fever, GI infections.
Adult (including elderly patients)Ear, nose & throat infections 250 mg 4 times a day. Bronchitis Routine therapy: 250 mg 4 times a day. High-dosage therapy: 1 g 4 times a day. Pneumonia 500 mg 4 times a day. UTI 500 mg tds. Gonorrhoea 2 g orally w/ 1 g probenecid as a single dose. Repeated doses are recommended for the treatment of females. GI infections 500-750 mg tds to 4x daily. Enteric fever Acute: 1-2 g 4x a day for 2 wk. Childn <10 yr ½ adult routine dosage.
Avoid use if infectious mononucleosis &/or acute/chronic leukaemia of lymphoid origin are suspected. Overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms in prolonged use. Severe renal impairment.
