Indications/Uses
Control type 2 diabetes in adults as an add-on to diet & exercise.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 0.5 mg before meals, may be adjusted up to 4 mg. Max: 16 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take w/in 30 min of meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ type 1 diabetes; diabetic ketoacidosis; severe liver disease. Concomitant use w/ gemfibrozil; clopidogrel.
Special Precautions
Diabetic control may be lost if patient is about to have major surgery or has recently suffered a severe illness or infection. Risk of hypo- or hyperglycaemia w/ too much or too little NovoNorm, respectively. Altered ability to reduce blood sugar w/ alcohol. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Not recommended in patients w/ moderate liver disease. Caution in patients w/ kidney problems. Do not take if pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breast-feeding. Not recommended if <18 or >75 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Hypoglycaemia. Stomach pain, diarrhoea.
Drug Interactions
Do not take w/ gemfibrozil or clopidogrel. Body's response to NovoNorm may change w/ MAOIs; β-blockers; ACE inhibitors; salicylates (eg, aspirin); octreotide; NSAIDs; steroids (anabolic & corticosteroids); OCs; thiazides; danazol; thyroid products; sympathomimetics; clarithromycin, trimethoprim, rifampicin; itraconazole, ketoconazole; ciclosporin; deferasirox; phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarb; St. John's wort.
