Meningococcal (groups A, C, Y & W-135) polysaccharide diphtheria toxoid conjugate vaccine
Indications/Uses
Active immunization of individuals 9 mth to 55 yr for the prevention of invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, C, Y & W-135.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM Primary vaccination Individuals 2-55 yr 0.5 mL single dose. Childn 9-23 mth 2 dose series 3 mth apart. Booster vaccination Individuals 15-55 yr at continued risk for meningococcal disease A single booster dose may be given, if at least 4 yr have elapsed since the prior dose.
Contraindications
Severe allergic reaction (eg, anaphylaxis) after a previous dose of a meningococcal capsular polysaccharide-, diphtheria toxoid- or CRM197-containing vaccine.
Special Precautions
Risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome. Review immunization history for possible vaccine sensitivity & previous vaccination-related adverse reactions. Persons w/ altered immunocompetence; certain complement deficiencies & persons receiving treatment that inhibits terminal complement activation. Reports of syncope. Pregnancy & lactation. Not approved for use in infants <9 mth. Adults >55 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Inj site reactions (tenderness, irritability, pain); diarrhea, drowsiness, anorexia; headache, fatigue; myalgia; fever.
Drug Interactions
Immunosuppressive therapies eg, irradiation, antimetabolites, alkylating agents, cytotoxic drugs & corticosteroids (used in greater than physiologic doses) may reduce immune response to vaccines.
