Cefditoren pivoxil
Indications/Uses
Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, uncomplicated skin & skin-structure infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & adolescent (≥12 yr) Community-acquired pneumonia 400 mg bd for 14 days. Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis 400 mg bd for 10 days. Pharyngitis/tonsillitis & uncomplicated skin & skin structure infections 200 mg bd for 10 days. Renal impairment Max: 200 mg bd (CrCl 30-49 mL/min/1.73 m2) or once daily (CrCl <30 mL/min/1.73 m2).
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins & milk protein. Carnitine deficiency or inborn errors of metabolism.
Special Precautions
History of hypersensitivity to penicillin or other cephalosporins. Pseudomembranous colitis. Prolonged use. Discontinue use if superinfection occurs. Monitor prothrombin time in patients w/ renal or hepatic impairment or poor nutritional state, receiving protracted course of antimicrobial therapy & previously stabilized on anticoagulant therapy. Patients w/ end-stage renal disease, patients w/ severe hepatic impairment. Concomitant use w/ antacids or drugs taken to reduce stomach acid. Pregnancy & lactation. Ped patients <12 yr. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, nausea, headache, abdominal pain, vag moniliasis, dyspepsia, vomiting.
Drug Interactions
Reduced oral absorption w/ antacids & H2-receptor antagonists. Increased plasma exposure w/ probenecid.
