Terbinafine
Indications/Uses
Fungal infections of the skin & nails.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult, including the elderly 250 mg once daily. Skin infection 2-6 wk treatment duration. Nail infection 6 wk to 3 mth treatment duration, w/ some toenail infection needing ≥6 mth treatment.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Swallow whole w/ a glass of water.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. History or current liver problems. Lactation.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ psoriasis; SLE; rash due to high level of a specific type of WBC; liver or kidney problems. Reports of feeling dizzy or giddy during treatment. Perform LFTs before & during treatment. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Headache; stomach problems eg, loss of appetite, ache, indigestion, feeling bloated or sick; diarrhoea; itching, rash or swelling; muscle & joint pains.
Drug Interactions
Potential interaction w/ rifampicin; cimetidine; antidepressants including TCAs, SSRIs, or MAOIs; OCs; β-blockers or anti-arrhythmics; warfarin; medicines for heart problems (eg, propafenone, amiodarone); ciclosporin; antifungals (eg, fluconazole, ketoconazole); antitussives (eg, dextromethorphan); caffeine.
