Fluconazole
Indications/Uses
Treatment of fungal infections of the mouth, throat, skin, genitals, urinary tract (bladder & kidneys) & internal organs. Prevention of fungal infection or repeated infection if the immune system is not working properly.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Genital infection eg, vaginitis or balanitis 150 mg single dose. Mucosal infections of the mouth & oropharynx 50-100 mg once daily for 7-14 days. Infections of other mucous membranes 50-100 mg once daily for 14-30 days. Fungal skin infections 50 mg once daily for 2-4 wk. Athlete's foot: Up to 6 wk treatment. Infections of the bloodstream, urinary tract or other body organs 400 mg on day 1 then 200-400 mg once daily. Cryptococcal meningitis & infections of other areas eg, the skin & lungs 400 mg on the day 1 then 200-400 mg once daily for 6-8 wk. Prevention of fungal infection 50-400 mg once daily while at risk of getting infection. Prevention of cryptococcal infection from returning 100-200 mg once daily. Childn 6-15 yr Max daily dose: 400 mg. Mucosal infections 3 mg/kg once daily. Internal fungal infection caused by Candida or Cryptococcus 6-12 mg/kg once daily. Prevention of fungal infections 3-12 mg/kg once daily while at risk of getting infection.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to fluconazole or related azoles eg, ketoconazole, miconazole. Concomitant use w/ terfenadine or cisapride. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ renal impairment. Not recommended for treatment of genital candida infections in childn <16 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, rash, stomach pain, diarrhoea, wind, nausea.
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ rifampicin or rifabutin; hydrochlorothiazide; warfarin or coumarin anticoagulants; benzodiazepines eg, diazepam or midazolam; oral sulphonylureas eg, glibenclamide, chlorpropamide, glipizide or tolbutamide; phenytoin; cyclosporin or tacrolimus; theophylline; zidovudine; astemizole.
