Advise patient of the signs & symptoms of allergic/hypersensitivity reactions, & monitor closely. Stop treatment immediately if serious allergic/hypersensitivity reactions, including SJS, occur. Gout flares may occur during treatment initiation; flare prophylaxis for at least 6 mth is recommended. LFT prior to initiation of therapy & periodically thereafter is recommended. Caution in patients w/ pre-existing major CV disease (eg, MI, stroke or unstable angina); w/ alteration of thyroid function. Not recommended in patients whose rate of urate formation is greatly increased; patients concomitantly treated w/ mercaptopurine/azathioprine; organ transplant recipients. Patients w/ rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this medicine. Safety & efficacy have not been established in patients w/ severe renal/hepatic impairment & in childn <18 yr. Limited information available in patients w/ moderate hepatic impairment. Exercise caution before driving, using machinery or participating in dangerous activities. Not to be used during pregnancy & breastfeeding.
