Ibuprofen
Indications/Uses
Treatment of RA (including juvenile RA or Still's disease), ankylosing spondylitis, OA & other non-rheumatoid arthropathies. Treatment of non-articular rheumatic conditions including capsulitis, bursitis, tendonitis, tendosynovitis, low back pain & soft-tissue injuries eg, sprains & strains. Mild to moderate pain eg, dysmenorrhoea, dental & post-op pain. Symptomatic relief of headache including migraine.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1,200-1,800 mg daily in 3-4 divided doses. Maintenance dose: 600-1,200 mg daily. Dose may be increased in severe or acute conditions. Max dose: 2,400 mg in divided doses. Childn ≥7 kg 20 mg/kg in divided doses. Max: 40 mg/kg daily in divided doses in juvenile RA.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ibuprofen, aspirin or other NSAIDs. History of, or active peptic ulcer/haemorrhage. Bronchial asthma. Severe heart failure. Peri-operative pain treatment in the setting of CABG surgery. History of GI bleeding or perforation related to previous NSAIDs therapy.
Special Precautions
Associated w/ serious liver injury. Increased risk of serious CV thrombotic events, MI, & stroke; serious GI adverse events. Renal papillary necrosis & other renal injury in long-term administration of NSAIDs. Not recommended in patients w/ advanced renal disease. Concomitant use w/ acetylsalicylic acid is not recommended. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly. Not recommended for childn <7 kg.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, melaena, haematemesis, ulcerative stomatitis, GI haemorrhage; hypersensitivity reactions; thrombocytopenia; fluid retention, headache, dizziness, vertigo.
Drug Interactions
Oral anticoagulants, heparin, ticlopidine, thiazide diuretics, moclobemide, lithium, sulphonamide hypoglycemics, methotrexate, pentoxifylline, zidovudine, baclofen, antihypertensives, digoxin, thrombolytics.
