Indications/Uses
Treatment of infections caused by flukes (trematodes) eg, various species of blood flukes (eg, due to Schistosoma haematobium, S. mansoni, S. intercalatum, S. japonicum, S. mekongi); liver flukes (eg, Clonorchis sinensis, Opisthorchis viverrini) & lung flukes (eg, Paragonimus westermani & other species).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult S. haematobium, S. mansoni & S. intercalatum (blood flukes) 40 mg/kg divided into 1-2 single doses, for 1 day. S. japonicum & S. mekongi (blood flukes) 60 mg/kg divided into 2-3 single doses, for 1 day. Clonorchis sinensis & Opisthorchis viverrini (liver flukes) 75 mg/kg divided into 3 single doses, for 1-3 days. Paragonimus westermani & other species (lung flukes) 75 mg/kg divided into 3 single doses, for 2-3 days. Childn & adolescent S. haematobium, S. mansoni & S. intercalatum (blood flukes) 40 mg/kg divided into 1-2 single doses, for 1 day. S. japonicum & S. mekongi (blood flukes) 60 mg/kg divided into 3 single doses, for 1 day. Clonorchis sinensis & Opisthorchis viverrini (liver flukes) 75 mg/kg divided into 3 single doses at 4-hr interval, for 1 day. Paragonimus westermani & other species (lung flukes) 75 mg/kg divided into 3 single doses at 4-hr interval, for 1 day.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Preferably taken during or after meals. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Intraocular cysticercosis. Concomitant use w/ rifampicin.
Special Precautions
Patient w/ severe liver failure or hepatosplenic schistosomiasis; impaired kidney function; abnormal heart rhythm, heart failure requiring digitalis therapy. Not effective against migratory (immature) blood flukes & consequently, ineffective during acute phase of blood fluke infection (acute schistosomiasis). If patients live in or come from an area where infections w/ larvae from pork tapeworm (Taenia solium) are endemic, administer Biltricide treatment in a hospital setting. May worsen symptoms affecting CNS or brain. Should not be used in patients w/ history of seizures or if there are any signs of CNS or brain impairment. May affect ability to drive & operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <4 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, dizziness; stomach & abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting; hives; fatigue. Vertigo, fatigue & delayed reactions w/ increased drowsiness; loss of appetite, diarrhea; rash; muscle pain; general malaise, fever.
Drug Interactions
Diminished effect w/ CYP450 inducers (eg, rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarb, primidone, dexamethasone). Increased effect w/ CYP450 inhibitors (eg, cimetidine).
