Indications/Uses
Reduction of high blood sugar in adults, adolescents & childn ≥6 yr w/ DM.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Individualized dosing by SC inj. Taken shortly (0-15 min) before or soon after meals.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Closely monitor blood tests, diet, & physical activity. Rotate inj site to prevent skin changes eg, lumps under the skin. Illness or major injury leading to hyperglycaemia; hypoglycaemia; during travel. Do not stop insulin & continue enough carbohydrate intake in patients w/ type I DM. Risk of heart failure development in patients w/ long-standing type 2 DM & heart disease or previous stroke treated w/ pioglitazone & insulin. Contains metacresol. May reduce ability to concentrate or react when driving or using machines. Patients w/ renal or hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Insufficient clinical information on the use of Apidra in childn <6 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Hypoglycaemia. Skin & allergic reactions at the inj site (eg, reddening, unusual intense pain, itching, hives, swelling or inflammation).
Drug Interactions
Decreased blood sugar level w/ other antidiabetics, ACE inhibitors, disopyramide, fluoxetine, fibrates, MAOIs, pentoxifylline, propoxyphene, salicylates, sulfonamide antibiotics. Increased blood sugar level w/ corticosteroids (eg, cortisone), danazol, diazoxide, diuretics, glucagon, INH, oestrogens & progestogens, phenothiazine derivatives, somatropin, sympathomimetics (eg, epinephrine, salbutamol, terbutaline), thyroid hormones, PIs, atypical antipsychotics (eg, olanzapine & clozapine). Increased or decreased blood sugar level w/ β-blockers, clonidine, lithium salts; pentamidine; alcohol. Masked symptoms of hypoglycaemia w/ β-blockers or other sympatholytics (eg, clonidine, guanethidine & reserpine).
