Severe renal or hepatic failure; blood disorders; hypersensitivity; acute porphyria; lupus erythematosus. Pregnancy and lactation. Infants 1-2 mth.

Adequate fluid intake to reduce risk of crystalluria; discontinue if rash occurs; renal or hepatic failure or with blood disorders; asthma or history of allergy; elderly; slow acetylators are at higher risk of adverse reactions. CBC and urinalyses should be monitored regularly during prolonged treatment. G6PD deficient patients.

GI disturbances; hypersensitivity reactions; skin and nephrotoxic reactions; SLE; blood disorders; serum sickness-like syndrome; hepatotoxicity; myocarditis; pulmonary eosinophilia and fibrosing alveolitis, vasculitis; hypoglycaemia, hypothyroidism, neurological reactions, jaundice and kernicterus in premature neonates, pseudomembranous colitis.

Potentiates effects of oral anticoagulants, methotrexate, phenytoin, NSAIDs; hypoglycaemic effect when given with sulfonylureas; reduces cyclosporin concentration; failure of hormonal contraceptives; antagonised by PABA and its derivatives. Compounds which render the urine acidic.

Interference with tests for urea, creatinine, urinary glucose, urobilinogen.
