Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach. Take 30 min before meals.

Special Precautions
Impaired renal function, esp end-stage renal failure.

Adverse Reactions
Dry mouth, blurred vision.

Drug Interactions
Enhanced effect when used other drugs with antimuscarinic properties and MAOIs. May affect absorption of other drugs. Antagonistic effect with parasympathomimetics.

Food Interaction
Decreased bioavailability when taken with food.

Action
Description:
Mechanism of Action: Pirenzepine is a selective M1 tertiary amine antimuscarinic. It decreases gastric acid secretion through preferential action on gastric mucosa; also reduces pepsin secretion. Pharmacokinetics: Absorption: Bioavailability: 20-30%. Reduced when taken with food. Distribution: 12% bound to plasma proteins. Poor diffusion across blood brain barrier. Excretion: About 10% excreted unchanged in urine, the rest in faeces. Elimination half life: 12 hr. |
