Why do I need this medicine?
Metronidazole is used to treat rosacea (skin flushing or blushing usually around your nose and cheeks).

This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
How do I use this medicine?
Apply Metronidazole exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.

This medicine is available as a cream, gel, or as a lotion.

To apply Metronidazole, follow these steps:
  1. Wash your hands.
  2. Clean and dry affected area before application.
  3. Apply and rub Metronidazole gently on the skin until it forms a thin film. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
  4. Wash your hands after.
  5. Replace the cap of the tube.
Avoid any contact of this medicine with your eyes. If an accidental contact occurs, rinse it immediately with water. Alert your doctor if you start to have any problems with your eyes.

You must complete the entire course of medicine. If you don't, the infection will not be properly controlled.
What should I do if I have forgotten to use this medicine?
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to use your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not use Metronidazole if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or other similar medicine (e.g. nitroimidazole such as tinidazole).
What should I take note of while using this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • nervous system disorder (disease of the brain, spinal cord, or nerves)
  • epilepsy (fits or seizures)
  • blood disease
  • Cockayne syndrome (a rare inherited disorder characterised by unusually short height, premature aging, sensitivity to sunlight, visual and hearing problems)
  • liver disease
  • kidney disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
What side effects could I experience?
Metronidazole may cause any of the following side effects: redness, dryness, itching or irritation of the skin, and skin discomfort such as stinging or burning sensation.

Metronidazole may cause your skin to be more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid direct or prolonged exposure to the sun and ultraviolet (UV) lamps like tanning beds.

Avoid any contact of this medicine in or near your eyes as it may cause tearing or watery eyes.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop using the medicine and alert your doctor immediately. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I use this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • blood-thinning medicines e.g. warfarin
  • medicines for HIV infection e.g. lopinavir, tipranavir
Let your doctor know if you are using any other creams, ointments, or other medicines on the affected area.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or using any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
