Indications/Uses
Control & symptomatic relief of acute, nonspecific & chronic diarrhoea associated w/ inflammatory bowel disease. Reduction of discharge from ileostomes.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Acute diarrhoea Initial dose: 4 mg followed by 2 mg after each unformed stool. Max: 16 mg/day. Chronic diarrhoea Initial dose: 4 mg followed by 2 mg after each unformed stool until diarrhoea is controlled. Dosage should then be reduced to meet individual requirements.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Colon constipation.
Special Precautions
Should not be used in acute diarrhoea associated w/ organisms that penetrate the intestinal mucosa & in pseudomembranous colitis associated w/ broad-spectrum antibiotics. Fluid & electrolytes depletion may occur. Discontinue use if abdominal distention occurs or if other untoward symptoms develop in patients w/ acute ulcerative colitis. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <6 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal pain, constipation, drowsiness/dizziness, dry mouth, nausea & vomiting, tiredness, hypersensitivity reactions including skin rash.
