Cefuroxime Na
Indications/Uses
Alternative drug for infections due to susceptible organisms eg, otitis media, orbital cellulitis, UTI, skin & soft tissue, bone & joint infection & post-splenectomy sepsis of unclear etiology.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 750 mg 8 hrly Severe infection 1.5 g IV 6-8 hrly. Infant & childn 25-100 mg/kg in 3-4 divided doses. Most infection 60 mg/kg/day. Neonate 30-100 mg/kg/day in 2 or 3 divided dose in the 1st wk of life. Gonorrhea 1.5 g as single dose. Meningitis Adult 3 g IV 8 hrly. Infant & childn 200-240 mg/kg daily IV in 3 or 4 divided dose, may be decreased to 100 mg/kg daily after 3 days. Neonate Initially 100 mg/kg/day IV, may be reduced to 50 mg/kg/day IV.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to penicillins or cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ GI disease particularly colitis, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea & colitis. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Skin rash, urticaria, eosinophilia, fever, serum-sickness reactions, anaphylaxis.
Drug Interactions
Aminoglycosides, probenecid.
