Indications/Uses
Dosage/Direction for Use
Having menstrual cycles Anytime w/in the 1st 12 days after the start of menstrual bleeding or any other time during the menstrual cycle (not just during menstruation). After childbirth W/in 10 min after delivery of the placenta or w/in 48 hr after childbirth. If not immediately after childbirth, as early as 4 wk after childbirth. After miscarriage or abortion Immediately if no infection is present. After stopping another method Immediately.
Contraindications
Unexplained vag bleeding; current PID, gonorrhea, or chlamydia; acute purulent (pus-like) discharge; distorted uterine cavity; malignant trophoblast disease; known pelvic TB; genital tract cancer. Pregnancy (known or suspected).
Special Precautions
Not recommended for insertion in women w/ AIDS (no antiretroviral therapy or access to care) & high risk of chlamydia & gonococcal infection (partner has current purulent discharge or STI) unless other methods are not available or acceptable. Longer & heavier menstrual periods, or bleeding or spotting between periods during the 1st wk after insertion may occur. Cramping following insertion (usually for a short time) may occur, but may last for several hr up to a few days. Check periodically, & particularly after menstruation to make certain that the threads still protrude from the cervix. Report immediately if period is delayed (w/ symptoms of pregnancy eg, nausea, tender breasts); if threads are missing, shorter or longer; copper T is expelled. Abdominal pain, pain during intercourse, infections (eg, gonorrhea), abnormal discharge, fever, & chills.
