Indications/Uses
As bronchodilator in the management of reversible airways obstruction in asthma & COPD.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 2.5-5 mg 4-6 hrly. Max dose: 15 mg/hr. Infant & childn 150 mcg/kg/dose 4-6 hrly. Impending resp failure Continuous nebulization at 0.5 mg/kg/hr. Max dose: 15 mg/hr.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Multiple pregnancy, cardiac disease, eclampsia, severe pre-eclampsia, intrauterine infection & fetal death, antepartum hemorrhage, placenta praevia, cord compression, threatened miscarriage.
Special Precautions
Hyperthyroidism, myocardial insufficiency, arrhythmias, susceptibility to QT-interval prolongation, HTN, DM. Risk of pulmonary edema in women being treated for premature labor & mild to moderate pre-eclampsia. Monitor plasma K conc in severe asthma.
Adverse Reactions
Fine tremor of skeletal muscle, palpitations, tachycardia, nervous tension, headache, peripheral vasodilatation, serious hypokalemia in large doses; hypersensitivity reactions including paradoxical bronchospasm, angioedema, urticaria, hypotension, collapse.
Drug Interactions
Increased risk of hypokalemia w/ corticosteroids, diuretics or xanthines.
