Indications/Uses
Ceftriaxone-susceptible infections including chancroid, endocarditis, gastroenteritis, gonorrhea, Lyme disease, meningitis, septicemia, syphilis, typhoid fever, Whipple's disease. Surgical infection prophylaxis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM/IV Adult 1-2 g daily as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. Severe infections Up to 4 g daily. Gonorrhea 250 mg single IM dose. Surgical infection prophylaxis 1 g single dose for 0.5-2 hr before surgery, colorectal surgery 2 g. Secondary cases of meningococcal meningitis 250 mg single IM dose. Childn & infant 20-50 mg/kg once daily. Severe infections Up to 80 mg/kg. Childn Secondary cases of meningococcal meningitis 125 mg single IM dose. Neonates Should not exceed 50 mg/kg daily for >60 min when given IV. 
Special Precautions
Avoid use in jaundiced neonates. Overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms for prolonged use. Pseudomembranous colitis may develop.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity reactions including skin rashes, urticaria, eosinophilia, fever, reactions resembling serum sickness & anaphylaxis.
Drug Interactions
May increase effect of anticoagulants & cause disulfiram-like reactions w/ alcohol.
