Chloramphenicol Na succinate
Indications/Uses
Treatment of infections caused by gm +ve & gm -ve organisms.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn 50 mg/kg in divided doses 6 hrly. Meningitis or severe infections Up to 100 mg/kg/day. Rickettsial diseases Continue 4 days after temp is normal. Typhoid fever 8-10 days. Full-term infant >2 wk 50 mg/kg daily in 4 divided doses. Premature & full-term neonate 25 mg/kg daily.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to chloramphenicols. Minor infections or prophylaxis. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Conduct adequate blood studies. Avoid repeated courses & prolonged treatment in newborn infants. Impaired liver function.
Adverse Reactions
Bone marrow depression characterized by decreased iron utilization, reticulocytopenia, leukopenia & thrombocytopenia. Aplastic anemia, hemolytic anemia, Gray baby syndrome, peripheral & optic neuritis.
Drug Interactions
Paracetamol, phenobarb, phenytoin or rifampicin. Coumarin anticoagulants, some hypoglycemic agents & antiepileptics. Alcohol.
