Indications/Uses
Treatment of infections due to susceptible organisms that are serious & life-threatening. Also used as prophylaxis for surgical infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM/IV/IV infusion 1 g 12 hrly increased in severe infections to 8 g IV daily in 2-4 divided doses; may be further increased up to 12 g in 3-4 divided doses. Childn 100-150 mg/kg daily in 2-4 divided doses increased to 200 mg/kg daily in severe infections. Neonate 50 mg/kg daily in 2-4 divided doses increased to 150-200 mg/kg daily in severe infections. Gonorrhea 500 mg as single dose.
Contraindications
History of allergy. Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity reactions. GI effects, anaphylactic shock (rare). Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Thrombocytopenia, eosinophilia, leukopenia, hypersensitivity reactions & GI effects.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid, aminoglycosides.
