Amoxicillin trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Treatment of UTI, otitis media, sinusitis, oral infections, bronchitis, uncomplicated community-acquired pneumonia; treatment of infections caused by susceptible strains of gm +ve & gm -ve microorganisms.
Dosage/Direction for Use
500 mg 8 hrly. Childn up to 10 yr 125-250 mg 8 hrly, <20 kg 20-40 mg/kg daily. Uncomplicated gonorrhea Amoxicillin 3 g w/ probenecid 1 g. Dental abscess, uncomplicated acute UTI 3 g repeated once after 8 or 10-12 hr. Severe/recurrent infections 3 g bid. Otitis media Childn 3-10 yr 750 mg bid for 2 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to penicillins. Patients w/ infectious mononucleosis, lymphatic leukemia or HIV infection.
Special Precautions
History of allergy, asthma, hay fever or urticaria. Renal impairment.
Adverse Reactions
Glossitis, stomatitis, black "hairy" tongue, nausea, vomiting & diarrhea. Hypersensitivity reactions eg, skin rashes, urticaria, exfoliative dermatitis & erythema multiforme, anaphylaxis. Anemia, thrombocytopenia, thrombocytopenic purpura, eosinophilia, leukopenia & agranulocytosis, moderate rise in SGOT.
