Dosage/Direction for Use
SC DM type 1 Maintenance: 0.5-1 IU/kg/day; type 2 0.3-0.6 IU/kg/day. Administer any time during the day, at the same time everyday.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Not intended for IV administration. Not for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis. Intercurrent conditions eg, illness, emotional, disturbance or stress. Monitor blood glucose periodically. Renal & severe hepatic impairment. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Childn <6 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Hypoglycemia; edema; allergy to insulin (systemic & local); hyperglycemia & ketoacidosis; inj site reactions (eg, lipodystrophy, redness, pain, itching, hives, swelling & inflammation); insulin resistance; temporary visual impairment, worsening of diabetic retinopathy.
Drug Interactions
May enhance blood glucose lowering effect & susceptibility to hypoglycemia w/ oral antidiabetic agents, ACE inhibitors, pentoxifylline, perhexiline, disopyramide, fibrates, fluoxetine, MAOIs, detropropoxyphene, salicylates, sulfonamides. May reduce blood glucose lowering effect & susceptibility to hyperglycemia w/ corticosteroids, danazol, diazoxide, diuretics, glucagon, INH, OCs, phenothiazine derivatives, somatotrophin, sympathomimetic agents [eg, epinephrine (adrenaline), salbutamol, terbutaline], thyroid hormones, PIs & atypical antipsychotic medications (eg, olanzapine & clozapine). Potentiated or weakened blood glucose lowering effect w/ β-blockers, clonidine, lithium salts or alcohol. May cause hypoglycemia w/ pentamidine. Reduced or absent signs of adrenergic counter-regulation w/ β-blockers, clonidine, guanethidine & reserpine.
