Furosemide
Indications/Uses
Treatment of edema associated w/ heart failure including pulmonary edema, renal & hepatic disorders & HTN. Management of oliguria due to renal failure or insufficiency.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Emergency cases 20-50 mg IM or slow IV at a rate of ≤4 mg/min. Pulmonary edema 40 mg slow IV over 1-2 min, if a satisfactory response is not produced w/in 1 hr, increase dose to 80 mg. Childn 0.5-1.5 mg/kg/day. Max: 20-60 mg/day.
Contraindications
Anuria, hepatic coma or electrolyte depletion. History of hypersensitivity to furosemide & sulfonamides.
Special Precautions
Renal failure due to nephrotoxic or hepatotoxic drugs or associated w/ hepatic coma, pre-comatose state. Prostatic hypertrophy or micturition impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Fluid & electrolyte imbalance including hyponatremia, hypokalemia & hypochloremic alkalosis.
Drug Interactions
ACE inhibitors, cisplatin, steroids, NSAIDs, probenecid.
