Metformin HCl
Indications/Uses
Management of type II DM.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 500 mg bid-tid, gradually increase to 2-3 g daily at intervals of at least 1 wk. Childn ≥10 yr Starting dose: 500 mg once or bid, gradually increase to a max of 2 g daily in 2-3 divided doses at intervals of at least 1 wk.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take w/ or after meals.
Contraindications
Mild renal impairment.
Special Precautions
Diabetic coma, ketoacidosis, severe infection, trauma or other severe conditions where metformin is unlikely to control hyperglycemia. Monitor renal function. Dehydration. Conditions associated w/ hypoxia eg, acute heart failure, recent MI or shock; excessive alcohol intake & hepatic impairment. Interrupt treatment 48 hr prior to & w/held at least 48 hr after contrast media exam. Annual monitoring of vit B12 conc during long-term treatment.
Adverse Reactions
GI effects including anorexia, nausea, vomiting & diarrhea; taste disturbance, wt loss; impaired absorption of various substances including vit B1; lactic acidosis.
Drug Interactions
Drugs lowering & increasing blood glucose conc; alcohol.
