Ceftazidime pentahydrate
Indications/Uses
Treatment of susceptible aerobic gm -ve organism; also used in empiric therapy of febrile granulocytopenic patient's usually in combination w/ antipseudomonal aminoglycosides.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Usual dose: Adult 1 g 8-12 hrly. Dose range: 250 mg to 2 g 8-12 hrly depending on the severity of disease or patient's condition. Childn 1 mth-12 yr 30-50 mg/kg 8 hrly. Max: 6 g/day. Neonate up to 4 wk 30 mg/kg 12 hrly.
Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to ceftazidime, cephalosporins or related antibiotics.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins; history of allergy, renal impairment. Monitor renal & hematological status during prolonged & high dose therapy.
Adverse Reactions
Allergic reaction including anaphylaxis; burning, discomfort, pain at inj site; diarrhea; elevated alkaline phosphate, SGOT, SGPT & BUN; nausea & vomiting; +ve direct Coombs' test; pseudomembranous colitis; seizures (in large doses).
Drug Interactions
Other bacteriostatic agent, aminoglycosides eg, kanamycin.
