Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Acute & maintenance treatment of schizophrenia Initially 10 or 15 mg once daily. Dose range: 10-30 mg/day. Dose increases should not be made before 2 wk. Adolescent 13-17 yr Treatment of schizophrenia Initially 2 mg, then titrate to 5 mg after 2 days, thereafter to the target dose of 10 mg after 2 additional days. Subsequent dose increases should be administered in 5 mg increments.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions
Risk of cerebrovascular adverse events eg, stroke, transient ischemic attack. Elderly w/ dementia-related psychosis.
Adverse Reactions
Constipation, akathisia, sedation, tremor, restlessness, extrapyramidal disorder, diarrhea, toothache, upper abdominal pain, musculoskeletal stiffness, back pain, myalgia, agitation, psychotic disorder, dysmenorrhea, rash, eye disorders, blurred vision, GI disorders, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, abdominal discomfort, salivary hypersecretion, general disorders, fatigue.
Drug Interactions
Decreased blood levels w/ CYP3A4 inducers eg, carbamazepine. Increased blood levels w/ CYP3A4 (eg, ketoconazole) or CYP2D6 (eg, quinidine, fluoxetine or paroxetine) inhibitors. Avoid concomitant use w/ alcohol.
