Adjunct to general anesth to facilitate endotracheal intubation & to relax skeletal muscle during surgery. Reduce the intensity of muscle contractions of pharmacologically or electrically-induced convulsions.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IVAdult 0.3-1.1 mg/kg. Usually 20-100 mg. Supplementary dose: 50-100% of initial dose at 5-10 min interval. Max total dose: 500 mg/hr given by IV/continuous infusion. Childn 1-12 yr 1 mg/kg. Infant <1 yr 2 mg/kg. IMAdult 3-4 mg/kg. Childn 4 mg/kg. Infant 4-5 mg/kg. Max total dose: 150 mg.
Contraindications
Atypical plasma cholinesterase; patient w/ burns, massive trauma, renal impairment w/ raised plasma K conc, severe chronic sepsis & severe hyperkalemia; penetrating eye injury, raised IOP or glaucoma, incision of the eyeball during eye surgery; bone fracture; history of malignant hyperthermia.
Special Precautions
Reduced plasma cholinesterase activity; previous hypersensitivity to any neuromuscular blocker; cardiac or resp disease. Pregnancy.
