Doxazosin mesilate
Indications/Uses
Clinical symptoms in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) & for reduced urinary flow associated w/ BPH. May be used in BPH patients who are either hypertensive or normotensive.
Dosage/Direction for Use
4 mg daily. Optimal effect may take up to 4 wk, if necessary, may increase dose following this period to 8 mg once daily according to patient response. Max: 8 mg once daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Swallow whole, do not chew/divide/crush tab.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to doxazosin or quinazolines.
Special Precautions
Postural hypotension evidence by dizziness & weakness or syncope (rarely) w/ the commencement of therapy. Preexisting severe GI narrowing (pathologic or iatrogenic). Intraoperative floppy iris syndrome during cataract surgery in patients on or previously treated w/ α1-blockers. Prolonged erections & priapism. Concomitant use w/ PDE-5 inhibitors. May impair ability to engage in activities eg, operating machinery or motor vehicle. Impaired hepatic function. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Vertigo; asthenia, peripheral edema; abdominal pain, dyspepsia, nausea; flu-like symptoms, resp tract infection, UTI; back pain, myalgia; dizziness, headache, somnolence; bronchitis, dyspnea, rhinitis; hypotension, postural hypotension.
Drug Interactions
Symptomatic hypotension w/ PDE-5 inhibitors. Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (eg, clarithromycin, indinavir, itraconazole, ketoconazole, nefazodone, nelfinavir, ritonavir, saquinavir, telithromycin or voriconazole).
