Contraindications
Porphyria.

Special Precautions
Peptic ulceration, hyperthyroidism, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias or other CV disease, or epilepsy, heart failure, hepatic dysfunction or chronic alcoholism, acute febrile illness. Neonates and elderly.

Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, gastro-oesophageal reflux and other GI disturbances, insomnia, headache, anxiety, restlessness, dizziness, tremor and palpitations.

Drug Interactions
Concurrent use with other xanthines may cause additive toxic effects. Clearance may be reduced by allopurinol, some antiarrhythmics, cimetidine, disulfiram, fluvoxamine, interferon alfa, macrolide antibacterials and quinolones, oral contraceptives, tiabendazole and viloxazine. Phenytoin and some other antiepileptics, ritonavir, rifampicin and sulfinpyrazone may increase theophylline clearance. Increased risk of seizures when used concurrently with imipenem. May potentiate hypokalaemia caused by hypoxia or when used with β-adrenoceptor stimulants, corticosteroids and diuretics. May increase the clearance of lithium.

Action
Description: Proxyphylline is a derivative of theophylline which is used as a bronchodilator and for its CV properties.
