Indications/Uses
In maturity onset (non-insulin-dependent) obese diabetics & juvenile diabetics in whom diet alone has failed as monotherapy or in combination w/ insulin, glitazones or sulfonylureas. Adjunct to diet & exercise to improve glycemic control in patients w/ type-2 diabetes.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 500 mg once daily w/ the evening meal. May be increased in increments of 500 mg wkly. Max: 2,000 mg/day.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Alcoholism, NIDDM complicated by severe ketosis & acidosis, diabetic precoma & coma, patients undergoing surgery, after severe trauma or during infections, COPD, CHD, cardiac failure, peripheral vascular disease, hypoglycemia. Renal or hepatic failure. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Lactic acidosis may occur (rare). Adjust dose according to blood glucose levels during the 1st few mth. Childn & elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, diarrhoea, gastric pain, constipation, vomiting, metallic taste in mouth. Rash, pruritus, urticaria, erythema, flushing. Headache, dizziness.
Drug Interactions
Phenprocoumon, thiazides, corticosteroids, alcohol, furosemide, nifedipine, amiloride, digoxin, morphine, procainamide, quinidine, quinine, ranitidine, triamterene, trimethoprim, cimetidine & vancomycin. Acarbose & guar gum may reduce the absorption of metformin HCl.
