Mupirocin - Nasal

Patient Medicine Information
Why do I need this medicine?
Mupirocin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in your nose.
How do I use this medicine?
Apply Mupirocin exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.

To apply the nasal ointment, follow these steps:
  1. Place a small amount (about the size of a matchstick head) of Mupirocin onto the tip of your little finger. A cotton bud or swab may be used instead of your little finger when applying to infants or those who are very ill.
  2. Apply the ointment in the inside surface at the front of one nostril.
  3. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for your other nostril.
  4. Gently press the sides of your nose together to spread the ointment inside your nostrils.
  5. Wash your hands after application.
  6. Replace the cap of the tube.
Mupirocin must be used regularly for it to be effective. Do not stop using it unless instructed by the doctor. You must complete the entire course of this medicine. If you don't, the infection will not be properly controlled.
What should I do if I have forgotten to use this medicine?
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose to make up for the missed dose.

If you often forget to apply your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not use Mupirocin if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or any of its ingredients.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen face, eyes, tongue, or throat, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
