Indications/Uses
Chronic management of hyperuricemia in patients w/ gout.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 40 mg once daily. May be increased to 80 mg once daily in patients who do not achieve serum uric acid <6 mg/dL after 2 wk. Gout flare prophylaxis w/ NSAID or colchicine is recommended for up to 6 mth.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/o regard to antacid use.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Co-administration w/ azathioprine, mercaptopurine, theophylline.
Special Precautions
Not recommended for asymptomatic hyperuricemia. Concurrent prophylactic treatment w/ NSAID or colchicine is recommended to prevent gout flares at initiation of treatment. Monitor for signs & symptoms of MI & stroke. Assess liver function at 2 & 4 mth following initiation of treatment & periodically thereafter. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Not to be used during pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Liver function abnormalities, nausea, arthralgia, rash, dizziness.
Drug Interactions
May increase plasma conc of xanthine oxidase substrate drugs eg, theophylline, mercaptopurine, azathioprine.
