Diphenhydramine is used to relieve allergic skin conditions such as allergic rashes, and itchy rashes due to stings and insect bites.
Apply Diphenhydramine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
If you have been given a cream, or gel, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Clean and dry the affected area before application.
- Rub Diphenhydramine gently on the skin until it disappears. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
- Wash your hands after using.
- Replace the cap of the tube.
Avoid contact with eyes or mouth. Rinse immediately with water if this medicine gets into your eyes or mouth.
You may stop using this medicine once you feel better, unless your doctor has instructed you otherwise.
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose to make up for a missed dose.
Alert your doctor if you have other skin conditions such as red, inflamed, itchy, cracked or rough patches of the skin or blisters in the hands or feet, as Diphenhydramine may not be suitable for you.
Do not apply this medicine to mucous membranes, open or oozing wounds, or large areas of the body.
Do not use Diphenhydramine with other medicines used to treat cold and allergy, such as brompheniramine.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving this medicine to a child.
Do not apply on large areas of your skin.
If you are going to have a skin testing, inform your doctor or the person who will conduct the test that you are using this medicine.
Diphenhydramine may cause any of the following side effects: rashes or swelling near the site of application, and red, inflamed, itchy, cracked or rough patches of the skin.
This medicine may also make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Apply sunscreen when going outdoors and avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and UV lamps.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Do not use Diphenhydramine with other medicines for cold and allergy e.g. brompheniramine, clemastine, hydroxyzine.
Let your doctor know if you are using any other creams, ointments, lotions or other medicines on the affected area.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
