Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that is used to relieve inflammation of the eye (e.g. conjunctivitis and keratitis).
Use Dexamethasone eye drops exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Do not use the eye drop for a longer period of time than advised by your doctor. Instill the required number of drops to the affected eye as directed by your doctor.
How to use the eye drop solution:
- Wash your hands with soap and water before using the eye drops.
- Tilt your head slightly backwards with the index finger, pull the lower eyelid away from the eye to form a pouch and look upwards. Instill the required number of drops inside the lower eyelid.
- Close your eyes and roll them slowly in all directions. Do not blink for the next 30 seconds.
- Wipe any excess liquid from your face with a clean tissue.
- Replace and tighten the cap of the bottle.
Do not touch/wipe/rinse the dropper tip, and do not let the dropper tip touch the eye, eyelids or other surfaces.
If you have been given another eye drop to be used together with Dexamethasone Eye Drop, wait for at least 10 minutes before applying the second eye drop.
Use the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to use your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- inflammation of the eye caused by infection
- eye discharge
- glaucoma
as Dexamethasone may not be suitable for you.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
If you are wearing soft contact lenses, remove it before using Dexamethasone eye drops. Wait for at least 15 minutes before reinserting your lenses.
Throw away any remaining eyedrops 4 weeks after opening. Mark the date of opening on the eyedrop bottle so that you know when the bottle was opened.
This medicine may cause your vision to be temporarily blurred. Do not drive if your vision is blurred.
Other side effects include any of the following: discomfort in the eye after using, eye irritation, itching, and burning sensation; and clouding of the lens of the eye.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- atropine (medicine used to make the pupil larger)
- rifampicin (medicine to treat TB, lung infection known as tuberculosis)
- ephedrine (medicine for colds and nasal congestion)
- medicine for seizure (fits) e.g. phenytoin, phenobarbitone
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Store below 25°C, away from the reach of children.
Do not freeze.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
Throw away any remaining eye drops 4 weeks after opening. Mark the date of opening on the eye drop bottle so that you know when the bottle was opened.
