Clindamycin is an antibiotic used to treat acne (also known as pimple).
Apply Clindamycin exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not apply more or less than instructed by your doctor.
This medicine is available as a topical solution, lotion, gel and foam.
If you are using the solution, lotion, or gel, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- For topical solution or lotion, shake the bottle well prior to use.
- Clean and dry affected area before application.
- For topical lotion or gel, you may use your fingertips to rub Clindamycin gently on the affected area until it disappears. Some topical solution are available in a bottle that has an automatic pad applicator which you can use to gently apply the medicine onto the affected skin. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
- Wash your hands after using.
- Replace the cap of the tube or bottle.
If you are using the foam, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Turn the container upside-down and put small amount of the medicine onto a saucer or other cool surface. Do not place it directly into your hands.
- Pick up small amounts of the medicine using your fingertips then gently rub on the affected area until it disappears. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
- Wash your hands after using.
Clindamycin topical solution and foam contains ingredients which are flammable. Avoid flame or smoking during and immediately after applying this medicine on your skin.
Avoid any contact of this medicine with your eyes or mouth. Rinse immediately with water if this medicine accidentally gets into your eyes or mouth. Alert your doctor if you start to have any problems with your eyes.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the severity of your condition.
Clindamycin must be used regularly for it to be effective. Continue using this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop using it unless instructed by your doctor.
Apply Clindamycin as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT apply more than what is instructed by the doctor to make up for the missed dose.
If you often forget to use your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not use Clindamycin if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or any other similar antibiotics such as lincomycin.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- history of inflammation of the bowel
- inflammation of the colon or large intestines
- history of severe diarrhoea associated with the use of an antibiotic
as Clindamycin may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you have a history of allergic tendencies such as eczema (patches of itchy red skin).
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Clindamycin may cause any of the following side effects: skin irritation, pain, dryness, oiliness, itching and burning sensation.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea accompanied by stomach pain or fever
- rashes, breathlessness, swollen face, eyes, tongue or throat
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- erythromycin (antibiotic)
- medicines to relax muscles during surgery e.g. atracurium, pancuronium, tubocurarine
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Clindamycin.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place, away from the reach of children. Do not refrigerate or allow to freeze.
Store the topical foam at temperature between 20-25°C. Keep away from heat, flame, or while smoking. Do not puncture the container.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
